Fourme d’Ambert has developed enormously since receiving the AOC in 1972, and now the AOP. Today, La Fourme d’Ambert is France’s 10th largest AOP cheese merchant in terms of volume.

With almost 5,800 tonnes of Fourme d’Ambert AOP sold per year, La Fourme d’Ambert is today France’s 10th largest cheese merchant. Since receiving the Appellation d’Origine in 1972, the volume of Fourme d’Ambert produced has tripled! At the beginning of the XX century, the division was producing only 200 tonnes per year.

This increase can be explained in part by the appellation d’origine award but also by the wide distribution throughout France of this outstanding cheese. Today, La Fourme d’Ambert AOP can be found in almost 90% of France’s hypermarkets and supermarkets.

The La Fourme d’Ambert AOP division is made up of :

  • 950 milk producers,
  • 5 milk collectors,
  • 6 dairies, directly employing 300 people,
  • 8 farms,

All members of the Fourme d’Ambert AOP division respect the AOP production conditions. They are regularly inspected and are brought together under the umbrella of the La Fourme d’Ambert Cross-professional Syndicate, the SIFAm.
